Country Music Legend Jimmy Dean Dies at 81

Jimmy Dean, singer of Big Bad John and entrepreneur of his sausage brand, died on Sunday at the age of 81. He passed away at home in Henrico County, Va.

Born in 1928, Dean was raised in poverty in Plainview, Texas, and dropped out of high school after the ninth grade. He went on to a successful entertainment career in the 1950s and '60s that included the nationally televised "The Jimmy Dean Show."

In 1969, Dean went into the sausage business, starting the Jimmy Dean Meat Co. in his hometown. He sold the company to Sara Lee Corp. in 1984.

Dean lived in semiretirement with his wife, who is a songwriter and recording artist, on their 200-acre estate just outside Richmond, where he enjoyed investing, boating and watching the sun set over the James River.... more

I have no use for anyone who wishes to boycott Arizona. If you wish to open our country to illegals and terrorist then you do not deserve my money in supporting your music. Nor do you deserve me playing your music and giving you air time on my radio station.

Ronnie James Dio - Passes Away

Ronnie James Dio, heavy metal vocalist and songwriter, passed away May 16, 2010 after losing his battle with stomach cancer. He was 67 years old.

Dio was known for his time spent in the bands Rainbow, Blacksabbath, and his own band Dio. In the early years doing local clubs and bars before becoming famous, he played in our area of PA, in a bar called the Old Mill when the bands name was Ronnie Dio & The Prophets.

Dio had a voice that was unmatched by any other heavy metal vocalist. If you have never listened to Dio tune into our station, Thumper and Moll and JR all play Dio. One of my favorite songs is Man on the Silver Mountain.

Rest in peace Ronnie, you will be missed.

Legendary singer Lena Horne dies

NEW YORK – Lena Horne, the enchanting jazz singer and actress who reviled the bigotry that allowed her to entertain white audiences but not socialize with them, slowing her rise to Broadway superstardom, died Sunday. She was 92.

Horne died at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, according to hospital spokeswoman Gloria Chin. Chin would not release any other details.

Horne, whose striking beauty and magnetic sex appeal often overshadowed her sultry voice, was remarkably candid about the underlying reason for her success.

"I was unique in that I was a kind of black that white people could accept," she once said. "I was their daydream. I had the worst kind of acceptance because it was never for how great I was or what I contributed. It was because of the way I looked."

In the 1940s, she was one of the first black performers hired to sing with a major white band, the first to play the Copacabana nightclub and among a handful with a Hollywood contract.

In 1943, MGM Studios loaned her to 20th Century-Fox to play the role of Selina Rogers in the all-black movie musical "Stormy Weather." Her rendition of the title song became a major hit and her signature piece.

On screen, on records and in nightclubs and concert halls, Horne was at home vocally with a wide musical range, from blues and jazz to the sophistication of Rodgers and Hart in songs like "The Lady Is a Tramp" and "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered."

In her first big Broadway success, as the star of "Jamaica" in 1957, reviewer Richard Watts Jr. called her "one of the incomparable performers of our time." Songwriter Buddy de Sylva dubbed her "the best female singer of songs."

But Horne was perpetually frustrated with the public humiliation of racism.

"I was always battling the system to try to get to be with my people. Finally, I wouldn't work for places that kept us out ... it was a damn fight everywhere I was, every place I worked, in New York, in Hollywood, all over the world," she said in Brian Lanker's book "I Dream a World: Portraits of Black Women Who Changed America."

While at MGM, she starred in the all-black "Cabin in the Sky," in 1943, but in most of her other movies, she appeared only in musical numbers that could be cut in the racially insensitive South without affecting the story. These included "I Dood It," a Red Skelton comedy, "Thousands Cheer" and "Swing Fever," all in 1943; "Broadway Rhythm" in 1944; and "Ziegfeld Follies" in 1946.

"Metro's cowardice deprived the musical of one of the great singing actresses," film historian John Kobal wrote.

Early in her career Horne cultivated an aloof style out of self-preservation, becoming "a woman the audience can't reach and therefore can't hurt" she once said.

Later she embraced activism, breaking loose as a voice for civil rights and as an artist. In the last decades of her life, she rode a new wave of popularity as a revered icon of American popular music.

Her 1981 one-woman Broadway show, "Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music," won a special Tony Award. In it, the 64-year-old singer used two renditions — one straight and the other gut-wrenching — of "Stormy Weather" to give audiences a glimpse of the spiritual odyssey of her five-decade career.

A sometimes savage critic, John Simon, wrote that she was "ageless. ... tempered like steel, baked like clay, annealed like glass; life has chiseled, burnished, refined her."

When Halle Berry became the first black woman to win the best actress Oscar in 2002, she sobbed: "This moment is for Dorothy Dandridge, Lena Horne, Diahann Carroll. ... It's for every nameless, faceless woman of color who now has a chance because this door tonight has been opened."

Lena Mary Calhoun Horne, the great-granddaughter of a freed slave, was born in Brooklyn June 30, 1917, to a leading family in the black bourgeoisie. Her daughter, Gail Lumet Buckley, wrote in her 1986 book "The Hornes: An American Family" that among their relatives was a college girlfriend of W.E.B. Du Bois and a black adviser to Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Dropping out of school at 16 to support her ailing mother, Horne joined the chorus line at the Cotton Club, the fabled Harlem night spot where the entertainers were black and the clientele white.

She left the club in 1935 to tour with Noble Sissle's orchestra, billed as Helena Horne, the name she continued using when she joined Charlie Barnet's white orchestra in 1940.

A movie offer from MGM came when she headlined a show at the Little Troc nightclub with the Katherine Dunham dancers in 1942.

Her success led some blacks to accuse Horne of trying to "pass" in a white world with her light complexion. Max Factor even developed an "Egyptian" makeup shade especially for the budding actress while she was at MGM.

But in his book "Gotta Sing Gotta Dance: A Pictorial History of Film Musicals," Kobal wrote that she refused to go along with the studio's efforts to portray her as an exotic Latin American.

"I don't have to be an imitation of a white woman that Hollywood sort of hoped I'd become," Horne once said. "I'm me, and I'm like nobody else."

Horne was only 2 when her grandmother, a prominent member of the Urban League and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, enrolled her in the NAACP. But she avoided activism until 1945 when she was entertaining at an Army base and saw German prisoners of war sitting up front while black American soldiers were consigned to the rear.

That pivotal moment channeled her anger into something useful.

She got involved in various social and political organizations and — along with her friendship with Paul Robeson — got her name onto blacklists during the red-hunting McCarthy era.

By the 1960s, Horne was one of the most visible celebrities in the civil rights movement, once throwing a lamp at a customer who made a racial slur in a Beverly Hills restaurant and in 1963 joining 250,000 others in the March on Washington when Martin Luther King Jr. gave his "I Have a Dream" speech. Horne also spoke at a rally that same year with another civil rights leader, Medgar Evers, just days before his assassination.

It was also in the mid-'60s that she put out an autobiography, "Lena," with author Richard Schickel.

The next decade brought her first to a low point, then to a fresh burst of artistry.

She had married MGM music director Lennie Hayton, a white man, in Paris in 1947 after her first overseas engagements in France and England. An earlier marriage to Louis J. Jones had ended in divorce in 1944 after producing daughter Gail and a son, Teddy.

In the 2009 biography "Stormy Weather," author James Gavin recounts that when Horne was asked by a lover why she'd married a white man, she replied: "To get even with him."

Her father, her son and her husband, Hayton, all died in 1970-71, and the grief-stricken singer secluded herself, refusing to perform or even see anyone but her closest friends. One of them, comedian Alan King, took months persuading her to return to the stage, with results that surprised her.

"I looked out and saw a family of brothers and sisters," she said. "It was a long time, but when it came I truly began to live."

And she discovered that time had mellowed her bitterness.

"I wouldn't trade my life for anything," she said, "because being black made me understand."

It's that time of year, much to do outside. Places to go and people to see while I am much more physically able so you wont be getting much in the way of blog posts the next few months. When fall comes it will get back to normal here again. Hope you all have a wonderful and safe summer. Remember just because there are not a lot of new post in blog does not mean that we will not be on the radio. Most of the time we will be on during our scheduled times. Thumper is taking Saturday afternoons off from djing through the summer but will return in the fall, Wed and Fri nights he will generally be on unless they are traveling or have company.

Up In Arms Again

Well, yes this has nothing to do with music per say, but it could sooner than you think.

Possible ban on menthol cigarettes has me up in arms again. Why? Yes I am a smoker but that's not the only reason. This is just like the ban of salt in food prep in the restaurant industries in NY state. Even if I was not a smoker I would still be pissed off! I don't use salt to cook with at home but why should some moronic law maker who is on a health kick decide for everyone else that the food prep should be done without salt everywhere? In the same token, why should some idiot in the FDA decide for me whether or not I should smoke? and if I smoke if I should be allowed to smoke menthol cigarettes??

DO YOU SEE WHAT I AM GETTING AT HERE PEOPLE????? WHERE IS OUR FREEDOM OF CHOICE GOING?????? WHY DO WE CONTINUE TO LET OTHER PEOPLE DECIDE WHAT CHOICES WE HAVE? WHY ARE WE LETTING OTHER PEOPLE DECIDE THE AMOUNT OF FREEDOM WE HAVE TO PURSUE LIFE LIBERTY AND HAPPINESS??????

O.k. I am done yelling now, to get back to the story. This ban has been kept hush hush until recently, now some of the talk shows are finally talking about it. This started about 2 years ago, I knew nothing about it, chances are neither did you! and some of you may STILL NOT KNOW, until now.

The federal governemnt (congress) passed legislation that gave the FDA the power to regulate cigarettes... "The legislation passed by Congress bans flavorings like chocolate and cherry, but excludes menthol-flavored cigarettes from the ban. The legislation, which is awaiting President Barack Obama's signature, calls for the FDA to examine the medical effects and marketing of menthol cigarettes and their impact on blacks, Hispanics, and other groups, with a report due back in 18 months. Based on these considerations, the FDA could either ban menthol cigarettes completely, order them to be phased out, or not take action."

Now the talk is that they will be banned because they seem to think that the menthol attracts more teenagers to start smoking. UM HEEEELLLLOOOOOOO!!! we already have legislation stating that cigarettes can not be sold to anyone under 18 years old. ENFORCE IT!! It is so typical of the American government to just keep passing more and more laws banning this and that instead of enforcing the laws we already have.

The other part of the possible ban is because The African American consumption of menthol brands is said to be so high because the media advertises the menthol brands much more the African American community. SO they have now turned into a racial thing.

Now let me explain something right here, I CHOOSE to smoke. I have told my family repeatedly should (notice I said SHOULD) I develope cancer they are not to sue the tobacco industry. I made a choice to smoke, I have to live or die with that choice. Personally I feel it is the same for the African Americans, they are making a choice to smoke, they have to take the consequences of that choice. It all comes down to CHOICE people and being responsible for that choice that YOU make.

Here is in my opinion on the problem, banning of menthol cigarettes is just the start, then it will be cigarettes all together completely, then chewing tobacco, then cigars and that's just this particular field. I hear you saying well that doesn't bother me I am not a smoker.

When there is nothing left to ban as far as tobacco goes they will move on the next latest greatest health concern they deem to be for the good of the American public. So what will it be next? Maybe something that does hit you personally, chocolate, coffee, beer, toilet paper, tea, popcorn, candy, nuts, pepsi, coke, mountain dew.... go ahead laugh now but wait you wont be laughing in a few years.

Yes I chose what seem to be rather harmless items, chocolate, toilet paper, nuts, popcorn... you're thinking well why would any of those be banned .. well why should any of our choices be taken away from us? why should we allow others to ban things in the first place.

Now I hear you with the whole gun thing but people answer this honestly and I mean honestly, have you ever seen a gun walk up on little gun legs and pull its trigger with little gun hands and kill someone? If you're answering honestly the answer is NO. The gun did not kill someone on its own, it was the person holding the gun. Yes children have had accidental shootings but again that goes back to the gun owner not being responsible and they should pay a price for that lack of responsibility not the entire country.

I hate to be a broken record but it seems I have to be, When is enough , enough? When is the American public going to wake up and start fighting back? I just hope it is before it is too late and there are no freedoms left anymore. Maybe it is time to stop playing games and start reading up and researching into what your government is doing for you!

Johnny Maestro Dies Wed March 24, 2010

Johnny Maestro, founder of the rock-and-roll and doo-wop band Johnny Maestro and The Brooklyn Bridge, died of cancer at the age of 70 on Wednesday.

He was first known as the lead singer of The Crests in the 1950s, a group best known for their hit "Sixteen Candles" before he formed The Brooklyn Bridge in 1968.

Born Johnny Mastrangelo, Johnny Maestro didn't seek attention off-stage and lived a relatively quiet life despite his distinctive voice in the industry. He recorded occasionally later in life and was living in Cape Coral, Florida, when he died.

Health Care Reform

Well we are all pretty much screwed now. I just hope the American people now wake up and realize what a travesty this past presidential election turned out to be. For those who voted for Obama, all I can say is... how is that hope and change working out for you? Or maybe I should wait to ask that until you discover just how much this worthless health care reform is going to cost you out of pocket and what kind of wait you will have to deal with to get your health care if this reform goes through the senate as well. You will then no longer have the right to pick and choose who you will get your health insurance from, you will have to buy from person A at more than person B. A better example here is that you are going to be told you must buy broccoli from farmer A instead of farmer B and you must buy it regardless of the fact that you don't even like broccoli, if you don't buy it you will be fined and/or put in prison. You think I am kidding you but I am not. Read up people.

Now wake up and start firing your employees (IE congress and senators, president) they do work for you. You hire them by election and you can fire them by election.
This time do your research, just like hiring an employee do the background research look at experience etc.

Kid Rock

Kid Rock was born January 17, 1971 in Michigan. He is best known for his rap career, which I never followed.

His duet with Sheryl Crow "Pictures" was ok but not one of my favorite songs. It did show he had a voice to sing if he chose too. He did a fabulous job on "Real Mean Bottle" with Bob Seger on Seger's latest cd "Face the Promise". In fact Seger was going to record "Real Mean Bottle" in a country arrangement, it was Kid Rock who said no you gotta do it hard rocking, and then proceeded to do the arrangement in a couple of minutes and the song was recorded for the cd in 2 takes. Kid Rock is a musical genius to be honest and has amazing talent, I'm happy to see him focuses in other areas of music besides rap.

Kid Rock's last cd Rock N Roll Jesus in 2007, was in classic rock style, and in my opinion turned out to be a pretty damn good cd. There were a few songs on it I didn't care for but how many cds do you buy where you love every single track on it? that doesn't happen often. I will buy the cds like Rock N Roll Jesus when he puts them out.

Darius Rucker was born May 13, 1966 and is probably best known for his role of lead singer in Hootie and The Blowfish. He also has a solo career in which his last album (2008) Learn To Live, had 3 number 1 songs on it, Alright Don't Think I Don't Think About It and It Wont Be Like This For Long.

Learn to Live has many other great songs on it as well, if you haven't bought it yet I can honestly recommend you do. It is well worth the money and you will not be disappointed.

Georgia man arrested for threatening Elton John

It seems a Georgia man was arrested Wed. for making terroristic threats to Elton John. Apparently the man didnt like it that Elton John said said he thought Jesus was a “compassionate, super-intelligent gay man who understood human problems.” He then posted videos of himself holding a sign in front Elton Johns apartment that read, Elton John Must Die.

Paul Frumkin reports in Nation's Restaurant News that New York Assemblyman Felix Ortiz has introduced a bill that would ban the use of salt in the preparation of restaurant food across the state.

So where does it end? If the smoking ban is any indication it doesn't end, and it's all in the name of your health. The next step will be banning certian music (the preformace tax is just the beginning on that front) then books, then movies, then.... you fill in in the blank. Unless of course the American people DEMAND that it ends and DEMAND their rights back.

If we don't stand up now , there will be nothing left to stand up for. I can assure you the more you allow them to do these bans on what may seem harmless to you right now, the more they will ban and eventually there will be no rights left to ban because we will no longer be living in a democracy but in a state of tyranny.

How do you put a stop to this nonsense? First write or call your state reps, and tell them your tired of freedoms that many men and women have died to protect being banned. Second when its time to vote, vote these idiots out of office, demand term limits, and for Pete's sake DO YOUR RESEARCH ON WHOM YOU ARE VOTING FOR! That means looking at voting records of candidates, looking at their job performance, evaluating what is important and what is irrelevant in their work, after all THEY DO WORK FOR US. We are the ones who hire them by electing them in the first place. So fire them and hire people who will stop this nonsense and make sure they can only serve the time set with term limits.
Time to wake up people. Start doing your home work, demand your rights back, and demand term limits. It's time for each of us to start firing the people we hire who aren't doing their jobs. It's time to look over the resumes of those applying in a harder much more skeptical manner and making sure through checking like an employer would that they are not lying to us on their resume. Most importantly it is time to leave race behind, regardless of the skin color can they do the job, have they done similar work that gives them the qualifications to do the job, did their resume contain lies or truths? It is up to us to take back our country.

AC DC's last cd "Black Ice" sucked from the view point of this ac dc fan. It contained 1 or 2 songs that actually sounded like ac dc. In my honest opinion it was a total waste if you haven't already purchased this cd don't bother it's a waste of money.

Well it was pretty awesome afternoon/evening. First it was Thumpers birthday and I had put a lot of songs in the line up to help him celebrate. Second family smileygirlnyc found us which totally put a smiley on my face! Then some old friends found us and it was great to see them too and chat with everyone.

Tomorrow (Sunday) evening I may dj at 7 since Roamer is on extended leave we have no dj schedule there but it will depend on what I have going on here tomorrow night.

Also Monday night at 9pm Dr Doowop will be on so make sure you tune in for that.

Reo Speedwagon

The last two CD's by Reo Speedwagon were 2007 and 2009. The 2007 cd was "Find Your Own Way Home" for those of us fans, this was not a disappointment in my opinion. There were several very good songs on that cd, well worth the low price at your local Walmart.

The 2009 release was a christmas cd entitled "Not So Silent Night" . Not something that Reo Speedwagon would be thought of doing but was well done. We played some of the songs on air this past holiday season.

If you're a big Reo Speedwagon fan, then I recommend both cds. However, if you're nut a huge fan then stick with "Find Your Own Way Home".

Something you may not have known about Reo Speedwagon. They took their name from the Reo Speed Wagon, a flatbed truck and fire engine. It was manufactured by the REO Motor Car Company. The R. E. O. are the initials of the company's founder Ransom Eli Olds who also founded Oldsmobile that was once a division of GMC.

Reo formed in 1967, growing in popularity through the 1970's, hitting its peak in the 80's with hits like; Keep on Loving You, Can't Fight This Feeling, Take It On The Run, Keep The Fire Burning, Time For Me To Fly and many others.

I actually saw them in concert 3 times, each with Survivor as the opening band. Both put on a very awesome show. The best concerts I ever went to during the 80's. Well worth the cost of tickets, every time I went. If they come to an arena near you go see them live. You wont regret it.

Performance Tax on Local Radio Stations

In case you haven't heard the news, the RIAA is at it again. This time around they want to levy a performance tax on local radio stations. If we owners and operators both of terrestrial and internet radio stations, as well as the listeners of said stations, do not take a united front on this, we all lose. The local radio stations and the internet stations will not be able to afford to stay on the air if these ridiculous performance taxes are allowed to pass in Washington.

When the RIAA went after the internet radio stations a couple years ago, we ran ads on our stations and had an organized day of silence in protest, we called and wrote our state representatives, we passed the information on to our friends and family to do the same until it was clear that the RIAA was not going to win and gave up. It is now time to stand once again united and say NO! NO!! NOO!!! Loud and clear NO more taxes on our radio stations!

Bob Seger Face The Promise

Bob Seger's cd, Face The Promise,released in 2006, was certainly not a disappointment to his fan that have followed the Michigan rockers career for decades. It was in true Seger form from the opening song to the last track.

The only surprise to this Seger fan, was Real Mean Bottle, which he recorded with fellow Michigan artist Kid Rock. Not being a Kid Rock fan because his style was rap music which I do not like, I was shocked at how this song grabbed me and held me. I have to say it is one of my favorite tracks of the cd. It was also interesting to hear Bob Seger say that he initially planned on recording that track in a country-style but Kid Rock told him no you have to do it in hard rocking fashion, which he proceeded to arrange in a matter of minutes and the track was recorded in two takes. This gave me a new appreciation of the musical genius and talent Kid Rock has hidden for years behind rap music. The other thing about Real Mean Bottle is that I actually like the remake of this old country song by Seger and Kid Rock better than the original. I am not big on remakes.

Face The Promise, Seger's first cd in 12 yrs, sold more than 400,000 copies in the first 45 days. It has sold over 1.2 million copies to date. The supporting tour was also eagerly awaited with many dates sold out in minutes show that Seger's appeal has not diminished, all 15,000 tickets available for his first show at Grand Rapids' Van Andel Arena sold out in under five minutes; three additional shows were subsequently added, each of which also sold out.

Seger was inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame in 2004 and belatedly in 2006 inducted into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame. Seger was born in 1945 and has been recording music since the 60s, his peak of national success started in 1976 with album Night Moves and continued through 1996 which was his last tour before taking time off to spend with his family and help raise his children.

In October 2009, Yessian Music reported on its social networking sites that Seger was re-recording his albums Smokin' O.P.'s and Seven. On October 25, 2009 it was revealed that Seger indeed had done some re-recording of older songs for an upcoming compilation album entitled Early Seger Vol. 1[14], a collection of out of print songs and also previously unreleased material. The album was released on November 24, 2009, initially exclusively available for purchase at Meijer. A week later it was available for download at BobSeger.com.

Journey's New Lead Singer

Arnel Pineda, Journey's lead singer is awesome. It still amazes me how much he sounds like Steve Perry. In my opinion he is better than Steve Perry, but that's just my humble opinion.

Neal found Arnel on of all things, you tube. When Neal emailed Arnel, Arnel thought it was a joke and didn't reply at first. When he did reply, he hit his major break. The band listened to him and signed him.

For those of you who are interested in a music career, you never know what is going to happen. Put your samples out there in as many places as possible, places you tube and others.

I'm a bit of a dead line here so this really isn't as good as I wanted to do with Arnel but its the basic story of how he became the new lead singer for Journey, I'm sure if you google Arnel Pineda you will find much more on this story.

We do this for fun and to pass our enjoyment of music on to others. We are looking for djs, if you think you would make a good dj, contact us. The schedule is at the right, any place you see Hal is open is open for a dj to have. What we are looking for is a good sense of humor, a love of music, a good voice, and some common sense in djs.

What kind of music do we play? We(each dj)have to purchase our music, most of us have a pretty extensive library but we may not have what you're looking for as far as requests. Should you decide you'd like to try to dj that is the first requirement that you must own music to dj with. We do not censor djs for the most part, we do not allow music that is filled with f**k you or pussy control.There is far too much music in the world that you do not have to play that on my station. My general rule of thumb is if you ask if the song is ok to play then it probably is not.

Once you have gotten your music ready, the software to dj with set up, then I will test you to see if your settings are correct and if you will or will not fit in with the rest of the djs.

So if you think you would like to try this then please do contact us and I'll help you get the programs you need to dj with. If you test ok we will give you a trial period and see how it works out.

Couldn't go back to sleep after the dog got me up at 330 so figured I would write in my blogs.

We were so lucky to have Russ help me get this set up, he needs a huge round of applause and buddy Tues night I'll play a double shot of SRV for you!.

Anyway its damn cold here in PA this morning 13 degrees. Where oh where is spring???? I need sunshine and warmth to get my brain working better. Seasonal depression set in about Nov so yea its been a long cold winter... hey that sounds like a song... Yep it is... by Cinderella.

Ok so I am wandering and ranting here but what else can ya do at 4am in the morning ? I am listening to Hal while I'm doing it though.

So now we have the chat area on our blog maybe we can get some people interested in becoming djs??? We could use djs for any time from 7am to 7pm through the week.

Well its painfully obvious to me that I wont be going back to sleep any time soon so I might as well go start some coffee.
